"We booked this restaurant for a 60th & 30th birthday party and booked well in advance after we were told of a special offer by the management. After we got there we were told that the offer was no longer available. We would have left, But as the manager pointed out well we would lose our deposits, The service was apalling trying to sort out this error. When we did order food. Some of the starter's were nice, but to quote one friend she felt like she was eating cold slugs. And i would rather not comment on the entertainment.. Or the amount of Stag do's in there, Let me say it was experience that we will not be repeating. "

" Slightly off the beaten track so it gets missed but this restaurant was wonderful. It had a lovely welcoming atmosphere, the service was helpful and friendly and the food was very tasty. Try the blinis to start! Our only disappointment was that we went on sunday so didn't get to see the russian dancers, next time we're in Liverpool we'll definitely go again but on friday or saturday!

Highly recommended as a different cuisine to try!

"Although the restaurant was very quiet, my girlfriend and I enjoyed a fantastic evening. We received impeccable, unobtrusive service and enormous plates of incredible food all washed down with the sweetest of Georgian wines.

It was my partner's birthday and they helped to make it a day she will never forget. The borsh morskoy is the most mouthwatering soup i have ever tasted!

Thank you and doubtless we will be visiting you again soon.

"Both great sea ports of the past, both (if you stretch a point) the birthplace of notable composers within their genre (Shostakovich and McCartney respectively). However St Petersburg and Liverpool seem not to share the love of Russian food, at least not at 7pm on a wet June Wednesday.

Apart from a muted engagement party (especially the groom, the sole male at the table), I was the only diner in the converted dock building that is the St Petersburg restaurant in York Street L1.

The evening started inauspiciously when the anxious-to-please staff member gave me the run of the house in terms of table choice, explaining that ‘not many people like Russian food’: at least the ‘take it or leave it’ sales technique was reminiscent of the Soviet era, even if the prices were not.

Things didn’t improve with the Estonian beer which arrived at warmer than room temperature (the later Russian Baltika, ubiquitous now in any upmarket chain bar, was marginally cooler)

St Petersburg offers two menus, the Bistro being more reasonably priced and the Tsar menu more pricey but more extensive, as well as a couple of set party menus.

There are two dining rooms on the first and second floor, incongruously enough above a (completely separately run) Greek Taverna, and private bookings are also possible for the upper of these. However on this weekday evening the atmosphere was sadly as absent as the customers and maybe the main chef too. Certainly basic touches such as cold beer and butter with bread had been dispensed with, and what followed was as up and down as the canals of the Venice of the North are not.

Opting for a mix and match, I chose the Bouzhenina from the Tsar’s menu. This was a typical Eastern European cold appetiser, a rolled pork joint pressed with pickled vegetables and served with a garlicky side dip: tasty, moist pork and traditionally malty black Russian bread made this a very good start indeed.

Having been recommended to try them, I went for the Blini S Miasom from the Bistro menu, ostensibly “two traditional pancakes stuffed with beef meat and onion sautéed in a cream sauce”. What I got however were two giant slightly Findus-ey, microwaved pancake parcels, which were not completely warmed through in parts but overdone in others, and were served with a cold cream sauce (for all its flavour it could have been a cold-cream sauce…): I couldn’t even taste any onion, let alone the minced beef. Since these were too heavy to enable me to try dessert even in the line of duty, I wished I hadn’t ordered the insipid coffee which accompanied the bill, which at £30 for two courses and drinks for one person was, by a hair on a traditional Russian hat, just the right side of reasonable.

The service was attentive if a little slow, and fine for the pace of the midweek evening, but I would be worried if I was in a larger party on a busy evening. "

"Sorry to spoil the party but we went last night on the basis of these great reviews and were very underwhelmed by the whole experience.

The food & wine were pricey for what you got (and we didn't go for the Beluga) and the Sturgeon was off the menu (not a promising start for a Russian Restaurant on a Saturday night).

Didn't appreciate Reginald Dixon on the Wurlitzer either. Having said that I did get an immediate response to my complaint and have to agree that the other customers appeared to be enjoying themselves. Maybe I should stay in more!"

"What a fantastic restaurant! Went the night before the Grand National with 6 others from Newcastle, and we thoroughly enjoyed the food and entertainment.

Russian food is far nicer than I imagined, or at least what they serve here is! No queues, snow or communism here.

Recommend the more expensive buffet to anyone. We'll come back."

"I was very sceptical about my first visit but after reading the reviews decided to give it a go. What a night and what a meal.

The menu is vast to say the least, you will probably have a hard time making your minds up, and we did. They serve Estonian and Russian bear and also a good variety of Vodka; it would be a crime not to try a couple of different vodkas in a Russian restaurant. I could go on forever about the quality of the food and also the variety, the easiest way to explain how good it is, go and enjoy it. I have no doubt in this face I have now recommended it to many of our friends. Probably one of the best meals I have had in the Liverpool area."

"Six of us went and had an excellent evening. The food was very good - the flamed steak especially tasty. The entertainment was a little lost on us as we couldn't see the stage at all from our table, but it sounded good.

Word of warning though - if you drink vodka prepare for an expensive night out, as there are an awful lot of different shots to try!!"

"I dined out in the restaurant on Friday night (25th June) I was part of a group of ten girls on a hen night from Burnley.

We were a little unsure as to what to expect as none of us had ever dined at a Russian place before, in fact I had begun to be a little nervous as to whether I had made the right choice! How wrong could a girl be!!!? We had a fantastic time!! The food was amazing, some of the girls said it was the best meal they had ever had!!

The service was excellent and every body had a great time so I would just like to say a HUGE thank you!!"

"I''ve been meaning to go to this restaurant for years, and finally made it recently.

I have to say I was really disappointed and very surprised at the rave reviews given by other people. If people think that this is "fantastic food" or even deserves a "Michelin star" then it''s no wonder we have so few quality restaurants in Liverpool - our expectations must be very low. And I''m not necessarily talking about fancy restaurants - I mean having places where they know what they are doing in the kitchen, fancy or otherwise.

I thought the food at the St Petersburg was average at best, and expensive for what you get - I started with pickled cabbage, which was supposed to come with gherkins, lemon and olives. I just got a small plate of pickled cabbage which costs £5 - an outrageous price for the cheapest ingredient you can get and for something which comes straight from a jar. My husbands portion of eel was quite tasty, but tiny, and I suspect straight from a tin. The main courses were not much better.

I don''t know much about auhentic Russian food, but I do know about good cooking, and I don''t think that the food in the St Petersburg is prepared by good cooks. The place relies too much on the entertainment and "party" atmosphere for birthdays and hen hights. If that''s what you want, fine, but don't go there expecting a good meal. "

"My partner and I visited St Petersburg for the first time yesterday after reading great reviews. I always feel quite disappointed when I step into a restaurant and can't smell food, there was, however, a smell but I'm not sure whether it was the pillar box red floor to ceiling paint or the mixtures of different vodkas.

Although the menu was vast and diverse I felt there was too much on the menu which left me feeling confused. I ordered King Prawns in garlic butter for my appetiser only to be disappointed when they turned up with the shell on (this wasn't stated on the menu), they were overcooked, dry and chewy.

My partner wanted to order something that was at least typically Russian and ordered belugar fish only to be told it was off the menu and was given the option to reorder - under pressure - with the waiter still standing at the table. He ordered the 'Ell' fish and to my amusement I guessed it was a typographical error so when the Eel turned up (at £8.95 for the chav of the fish world) he was very very disappointed. Not only was he disappointed at the fact that he got Eel instead of Ell fish, it was cold and almost raw. Granted, this maybe how it is typically served within Russia, so can't really complain. We both ordered fillet steak with chipped potatos. The steak was nice but quite dry.

Overall, we both felt it was overpriced and overated. The service wasn't brilliant and we felt they were "Russian" us by clearing the table too quickly and taking away the unfinished bottle of wine. We also had to collect our own coats from the coat rail, not very good restaurant etiquette."

"St Petersburg is the only authentic Russian restaurant in Liverpool St. The Stroganof is the signature dish and the list of vodkas out does the wine list. The wine list has plenty of Russian and eastern European bottles as well as a selection of world wines. A great place for a unusual and fun night out."

""I have discovered the greatest restaurant around -What can I say but this is THE place to go in Liverpool -- the jewel of Russia in Merseyside!

The food is as sumptuous as the menu is diverse; the staff are ALWAYS thinking of you first and the whole experience is second to none. Everyone is treated with excellent customer service, whether you are a footballer, film star or man on the street -- and many stars do eat in there! This restaurant is a testiment to the excellent cuisine that is available in Liverpool.......the St Petersburg and it's staff lead the way in the dining experience.

The owners are friendly and always take the time to mingle with the guests and make them feel welcome. I can't stress enough how good this restaurant is.........I only wish I had discovered it earlier! Thanks to all the staff who make the experience of eating at the ONLY Russian restaurant in the area a great one! Spassibo! (and you have GOT to try their blini!!!) ""

""I heard about this place after reading some good reviews - and booked it for my hen night. What a major mistake! My meal failed to turn up, and after a rude waiter denied all knowledge of a mistake sent the manager over to discuss why I thought I shouldn't pay for my meal (now a revised order of a quickly cooked dish so I could attempt to eat it before the rest of my guests finished).

"The manager pointed out he wouldn't knock my meal off the bill, as there was nothing wrong with my food (I couldn't tell - it still hadn't turned up at this point). Curiously, later, he came back and in a loud voice told the restaurant he would knock my meal off the bill, and gave us a free bottle of wine....he obviously hadn't bothered to check what we were drinking and brought a medium which no one touched. Shame really - the food was nice, but I've NEVER EVER experienced such atrocious customer service and been nearly reduced to tears by rude, incompetent and thoughtless staff! Please, please avoid this terrible customer experience - I really wish I had taken my friends, visiting Liverpool for the first time, anywhere else."
