All About: Cricket
If like me you thought Cricket opened the day Liverpool signed Gerrard you’ll be impressed to find this small boutique has been in business for fifteen years.
Cricket exploded onto the scene with the recent ascent of WAG culture in the media, and with two of the most talked about and glamorous footie wives and self professed designer devotees hailing from Liverpool, Cricket has had its fair share of free publicity.
Yes Alex Curren and Colleen McCouglin made Cricket a household name and introduced the rest of the world to the ‘Liverpool look’ but do you need a WAG’s wage to carry that over papped pink paper bag?
Well..In a nutshell, yes!
I took a peek around both small floors of the trendy boutique feeling like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, but my stereotype of snooty shop assistants was unfounded as the staff were lovely and not a bit pretentious.
The store is located in Cavern Walks, a small shopping arcade just off the infamous Mathew Street, that’s home to Vivienne Westwood (the shop not the woman) Drome couture and Christopher James.
The store is canny enough to know its clientele and manages to successfully tap into the trends making the current rounds in the city. Cricket understands that Liverpool doesnt follow fashion, fashion follows Liverpool so for this reason alone they stock some truly exquisite one offs. Unfortunately though the least expensive item of clothing would of set us mere mortals back a weeks wage!
The Chloe bags left me slack jawed and there were some excellent kooky telephone and dog shaped bags that looked conspicuous amongst the Matthew Williamson and floaty chiffon numbers.
Cricket undoubtebly kit out the city’s movers and shakers and football spouses but is the sudden interest in Liverpool as a fashion capital thanks to Cricket, Liverpool FC and the cast of Hollyoaks? Well actually no..
Liverpool has always been a city rife with fashion and culture, having introduced Adidas to the UK and punk to the mainstream the city has been severely overlooked but consistently on the edge when it comes to style. The style resonating from the Scouse isn’t about designers or expensive boutiques, its about originality, customising and not being afraid to experiment and of course a little fake bake helps too!
